Happy Endings is the BEST TV COMEDY EVER – That Thing You Like #44

Happy-Endings-Podcast-Review

Did you watch ABC’s HAPPY ENDINGS? No? Then you are a BAD PERSON.

Sigh. I’m sorry, we just get emotional about Happy Endings, or, as it’s commonly known around here at THAT THING YOU LIKE, the greatest sitcom of all time. Friends? Ain’t got time for you. Frasier? Pssh. Cheers? DON’T MAKE US LAUGH! It’s our longest pod ever: A two hour love-fest / memorial for a brilliant comedy taken far too soon. And so PROFOUND was the show’s impact on our lives, we had to enlist the TV and Comedy expertise of the great DENEA CAMPBELL to properly discuss what makes HAPPY ENDINGS truly shine above its competition.

Or, listen to the episode here: http://bit.ly/1e32C7X

It’s two hours of fun, folks. We do not one, but TWO power rankings, if that whets your appetite. Denea jump starts the conversation by bringing us a Happy Endings-Friends comparison from a (shockingly homophobic!) outside source, which is a natural starting point to discuss just how much better Happy Endings is than literally every other situation comedy ever. And every movie ever. And probably better than, I don’t know, the moon. It’s better than the friggin’ MOON.

If you’ve seen Happy Endings, let us know how you feel about it in the comments! Or alternatively, we really hope our love-fest inspires you to give the show a chance. If you enjoyed the show, please leave us a rating and review on iTunes, and tell your friends! Because we’re all on TEAM FRIENDSHIP!

Seriously guys. Watch the show so you can get all these references. ❤

Sherlock – That Thing You Like #43

Sherlock and Moriarty slash!

SHERLOCK LIVES! THAT THING YOU LIKE couldn’t stay away from the classic-detective / tumblr-superstar that is BBC’s Sherlock – we’ve seen all of season three, and have organized our thoughts thusly into podcast form! As always, it’s a full spoiler smack-down, so be warned! But the show gave us a lot to discuss aside from plot points: Is Stephen Moffatt sexist? Did he totally ruin Irene Adler as a character? Why does the show make so many “Not gay!” jokes?

And finally, how does John not see the deep desire, the longing in Sherlock’s voice, as they stare at each other across the flat at 221B Baker Street? It had been a rough stretch for Dr. Watson, but Sherlock had always been there. As a friend. Or… something more? John often found himsel- WOOPS, SORRY GUYS, DIDN’T MEAN TO GO ALL TUMBLR / SLASHFIC ON YOU.

That Thing You Like #32 – Breaking Bad (w/ Game Time Decision)

Breaking Bad - The Finale

BREAKING BAD just ended. After a couple weeks spent digesting the finale, THAT THING YOU LIKE is ready to talk about the show’s place in the pantheon of all time great television! But for a show this grand, this monumental, this epic (to borrow a completely overused adjective), we know we couldn’t settle for any half measures. So, enjoy our full measure: A no-holds barred, 90+-minute Breaking Bad pod with the boys of GAME TIME DECISION!

Click Here to Subscribe! – We’re nice guys, and loyal to our crew. We could be the Badger to your Skinny Pete! That’s right – in this analogy, we are all best friends. Best podcast friends!

Or, listen to the episode here: http://bit.ly/1gBR6Dw

First, to business! We were on this week’s episode of GAME TIME DECISION! If you come to THAT THING YOU LIKE for its witty banter, there’s a whole lot more of it on their pod! Plus, we talk Batman and Jurassic Park playsets. Go listen!

Mike and Ryan from Game Time Decision brought some really interesting views to the table, and allowed us to discuss the merits of binge-watching versus having the “from day one”, week-to-week experience. We also debate the ‘too neat’ criticism of the finale, talk favourite moments, and finish with a round-table, off-the-draft-board-style CHARACTER POWER RANKINGS! Our favourite thing, but this time, with four people! It was great times.

Also, there’s some audio issues with the episode – apologies! Please look past it where you can, and enjoy the great quality of discussion. It’s blue-crystal good. Was that a lame Breaking Bad joke? Alright, that’s it. I’m out. I’m out like a New Hampshire-isolationist cabin. I’m out, and I’m watching Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.

If you liked the show, please rate and review us on iTunes, and be sure to tell your friends! Also, let us know your favourite Breaking Bad moments. Did you think Holly was going to die? You’re not alone, but real talk, that would have been a huge bummer.

That Thing You Like #30 – New Girl

New Girl - Podcast

Who’s that show? Who’s that show? THAT THING YOU LIKE! This week, we go next level on NEW GIRL, an ensemble comedy that hasn’t just found an incredibly strong footing, but is actively getting better with time.

Click Here to Subscribe! – We’re something honest, you know? The kind of podcast a coal miner could enjoy.

Or, listen to the episode here: http://bit.ly/18L8j71.

What was once perceived as a Zooey Deschanel vehicle has become a rich, well-rounded ensemble comedy. It’s the kind of show that makes you enjoy just spending time with its characters – but especially Schmidt. Oh Schmidt; your antics delight all.

On the show, we run-down the show’s rocky beginnings, and even rockier handling of its characters throughout season one. But past that, we get into what makes each character sing, how the show learned to play to each actor’s strength, the atypical (or Mary Tyler Moore throwback?) qualities of Zooey as Jess Day, PLUS ALL THE SCHMIDT TALK YOU CAN HANDLE! And also #NickAndJess.

And also, we end by doing power rankings of our favourite cooking spices. And give a special, personalized outro that is JUST FOR YOU.

Look, these both make sense in the context of the episode, okay? Just open your heart and go with it. If you’re a New Girl fan, or if you just enjoyed the podcast, let us know how you feel about the show! Maybe tweet us your favourite Schmidt line? And wouldn’t it also be fun to rate us on iTunes and share the show with your friends? Dear listener, of course it would.

That Thing You Like #28 – How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother - Podcast

On the eve of its final season, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER deserves a proper send-off. And That Thing You Like is JUST THE PODCAST TO DO IT! Chris, Brian and friend of the show, Iris Dias of Talkfoolery, breakdown what made the show so special in its near-perfect early seasons, go next level on each of the characters, and pick some favourite moments. Enjoy!

Click Here to Subscribe! – It’ll be LEGEN-wait for it… No, you know what. I can’t. The joke is too easy. It’s just, ugh, the lowest of low-hanging fruit. We’re better than that, and I’m sorry for even suggesting we would go there.

Or, listen to the episode here: http://bit.ly/18TNKBO

– DARY! Alright, we all knew that was coming. Admit it: You enjoyed it at least a little.

As the intro paragraph so artfully mentioned, we couldn’t do this episode alone. Or, more accurately, we could have done it alone, but preferred not to. Because sometimes we get lonely. So we’re glad Iris Dias could join us in our How I Met Your Mother super-fandom extravaganz-tacular.

The show has grown weak in its old age, and pretty much failed to deliver on its premise’s original conceit. On the show, we try to figure out where it started to go wrong, and debate (read: all agree with each other) if the show was just an unfortunate victim of being relegated to CBS’ “Forever-Renewed / Eternal-Franchise” hierarchy. Fan of the show? Wish it had been Old-Yeller’d some time ago? Let us know in the comments!

And, because we all forgot to mention this moment:

That Thing You Like #27 – Marvel’s The Avengers / Agents of SHIELD

Marvel's The Avengers

THAT THING YOU LIKE zaps it up! We finally got around to discussing THE AVENGERS – a movie that shines a light on what big-budget blockbusters can be, entertainment-wise. If those blockbusters focus on, you know, giving memorable characters some good dialogue, treating the audience with respect and creating crowning-moments-of-awesome that they actually earn. And also focus on having Joss Whedon; that guy is just the best.

Click Here to Subscribe! – …And then shawarma after.

Or, listen to the episode here: http://bit.ly/1aXyX0u

It may seem like a silly, men-in-armor-and-tights kind of joint, but beneath all that, THE AVENGERS is actually a testament to the importance of letting real character moments drive your story. Seriously. Everybody go read some Film Crit Hulk. We talk about how Whedon manages to not just create a solid action movie using pre-established characters, but also uses their interactions to make the characters more well-rounded and funnier – and thus, more compelling overall.

We go next level on a few elements of the movie, including Whedon’s characterization of ScarJo’s Black Widow, Mark Ruffalo’s amazing take on the hulk, and then spend a little while getting prepped for the (hopefully fun) Agents of SHIELD tv show, which premieres next week. Excited for the new show? Have thoughts about Marvel’s box-office-destroying masterpiece? Let us know!

That Thing You Like #23 – Tavis Maiden!

photo-main

This week That Thing You Like had the absolute pleasure of being joined by webcomic creator extraordinaire Tavis Maiden. The man is one of the best cartoonists out there and we had a delightful time chatting with him about his many excellent comic strips, his time spent being the dad on Strip Search and the kickstarter for his exciting new project Tenko King. Which, coincidently, you can GO BACK RIGHT NOW! Like, right now, now.

It’s a tale about a boy and his magic frog pal and the many adventures they share. How incredible does that sound?!  Go on, the episode will be waiting for you when you get back from, uh, backing.

Click Here to Subscribe! – And share an audio adventure with us (although, full disclosure, we have no enchanted amphibians).

Or, listen to the episode here: http://bit.ly/19jh08k

Did we mention what a delightful time we had chatting with Tavis? Well, let me tell you, so delightful was this chat, that it CRUSHED our record episode length by a ridiculous margin. Clocking in at one hour, fifty-four minutes and forty-seven seconds, we are prepared to declare that this is the only episode of any podcast that you will ever have to listen to ever.

We speak about LITERALLY every subject one could possibly use human speech with which to speak about. Comics? Talked about it. Video games? Gotcha covered. Pro wrestling? We are all over that! The secret origin of Tavis Maiden’s hat? REVEALED AT LAST!

Most importantly though, we get down to the very core of why Tavis Maiden is such a brilliant webcomic creator and all around awesome guy. He offers some lovely insights into his ever so endearing slice of life strip Stranger Danger (we are seriously in love with this strip), what it has been like wrapping up his rock and roll spy-fi adventure The Konamis AND his experiences with his very own podcast actually GIANT. All of which can be found over at Thunderskull Press.

Even most-er importantly though, we talk all about his next big project TENKO KING! Tavis even shares with us some exclusive content regarding his plans for the strip and we could not possibly be more excited to see it in action!
