Love Actually – That Thing You Like #39

Love Actually - Not romantic?

As they say in England, Happy Christmas! THAT THING YOU LIKE is ringing in the season by going next level on LOVE ACTUALLY, a modern Christmas classic! As far as I (Brian) is concerned, this is our best podcast ever: We had a ton of fun recording the ep, got at some deeper-level themes of the movie in question, and wound up feeling different about the film after all the discussion. Enjoy!

We had an incredible time dissecting this film, and went in ready to gush about all the British charm on display. Unfortunately, we found some… problematic, recurring things. Things we liked less. Do we still love the film? We sure hope so! But seriously, Andrew Lincoln is  creepy – I think we can all agree that passive aggressively crushing on your best friend’s girl isn’t cool. And really, isn’t that the true meaning of Christmas?

We hope you liked the episode! If you feel festive, make our  wish come true – all we want for Christmas is you… to share the podcast and leave us a rating on iTunes! (See what I did there? Mariah style.)

That Thing You Like #24 – The World’s End

The World's End

Like a refreshing pint of amber ale, That Thing You Like is here to provide some tasty analysis of the final act of The Cornetto Trilogy, The World’s End. Is it funny? Definitely. Is it the hilarious, warm celebration of friendship and cinema that the first two movies are? LISTEN AND FIND OUT.

[FULL SPOILERS AHEAD.]

Except that, as The World’s End shows us, a pint with friends isn’t always just about a pint with friends. The film is altogether heavier than its predecessors, and pointedly addresses both the ever-present “man-child” trope, as well as the unfortunately poisonous nature of some friendships in general.

Remember when we did that other episode about the films of Edgar Wright? The World’s End is a brilliant companion piece to those films. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz may be hilarious comedies, but at their core, both are about the true power of friendship, and how important it is to personal development. Without spoiling anything here, it seems like Wright and Pegg had something a little different to say about friendship and personal growth this time around.

But! We loved it! Yay! A movie that we liked! I already can’t wait to see it again and get even MORE out of the experience. Maybe in around five years, the world will have unpacked the deeper references and themes of the film the way they have Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. But, at first blush? We’re calling it the movie of the year.

That Thing You Like #19 – Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost

EDGAR WRIGHT is the best, and That Thing You Like isn’t afraid of letting the universe know how much we appreciate his work. With the release of The World’s End just around the corner, we cast a pod that looks at his career to date: the fun television effort, Spaced; the movie that launched 1000 fandoms, Shaun of the Dead; the absolutely incredible Hot Fuzz; and the masterclass in visual production and editing that is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

It’s an episode that is overflowing with love for Wright. Does he make love-letters to genre films? Absolutely. But we spend a little time on the pod talking about how he might be more than that – with his quick references, spot-on music cues, and general media savvy, Wright is a filmmaker that really captures the spirit of the modern age.

Everyone, join us in our excitement for World’s End and our appreciation of the Wright filmography! If you like the show, please tell a friend, share a link, maybe rate us on iTunes? Thanks, babe.

TTYL Podcast #14 – Strip Search Finale (2 of 2)

Strip Search - Penny Arcade and the Final Three

And lo, Strip Search did come to this. It was a gripping finale, pitting the insanely talented Maki Naro, Katie Rice and Abby Howard against each other in a battle of original comic pitches and on-the-spot strip creation. It was a finale that let a lot of personality shine through, and provided a perfect way for Penny Arcade to deliver on the “America’s Next Top Webcomic” premise.

That Thing You Like was lucky enough to attend the live screening of the finale, and we’ve got our FINAL STRIP SEARCH FINALE PODCAST ABOUT THE FINALE for your enjoyment. Having watched the finale in a room with 400 others and attended the official after party, we are able to provide never-before-heard levels of insight into the slice of reality show gold that was Strip Search season one! Next level podcasting!

In this episode, we spend some time discussing the events of the last two episodes, the winner, and what the future holds for each of the final three. Plus, the pros and cons of each artist’s strip pitch. Then, after showering praise upon a deserving champion, your fearless hosts talk about the show as a whole: What did we love? What would we change? Who would we want back for season two?

All of these questions are answered. And, if you can believe it, we discuss even more questions than I’m mentioning in this post! It’s a tremendous “questions-answered-per-podcast” value! We do this for you, dear listener.

TTYL #9 – Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness - Podcast Review

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is a summer blockbuster that, like IRON MAN 3, is proving to be divisive. What did two decidedly non-trekkies have to say about the film? Find out in That Thing You Like‘s definitive podcast review!

We boldly go (nailed it!) into spoilers, and talk about what makes the movie tick. The character stuff? All awesome. Spock and Kirk have some great moments, and Simon Pegg nearly steals the whole show. The plot? Decidedly less awesome.

Maybe the movie was never going to match the unexpected joy that was the 2009 reboot, but damn it, our hearts were ready to love.
