That Thing You Like #31 – Gravity

gravity-movie-686-1374709085

This week we sat down to discuss Alfonso Cuarón’s GRAVITY. A film that pits Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, and one other guy against the biggest dick in all of existance: SPACE!

Seriously you guys, space is a real dick in this movie. It makes you realize that you totally wouldn’t want to invite space to a party at your house. It’d drink all your booze, throw up in your bathroom, and probably say mean things about your decorating choices. Just a real dick.

It’s a really great movie though!

Ladies and gents, this film is one you do not want to miss in theaters. Aaaaaaaand judging by the bonkers amount of money the thing has been raking in, odds are you probably haven’t. Good on you. Good on all of us!

GRAVITY is just an absolutely stunningly beautiful film. Admittedly the characterization might be a bit thin, but it certainly gets the job done. Besides, this movie is all about them visuals. Them glorious visuals. It’s real pretty is what we’re saying. Is it $20 IMAX 3D movie ticket pretty? Well… maybe!  Although… ugh, $20.

Beyond that, it’s also what is known as “a real thrill ride.” We might even be inclined to say that “you’ll pay for the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge.” However, there’s a good chance you paid $20 for that seat. So, you know what, use that whole thing. Get your butt all up on that seat. You earned it.

That Thing You Like #29 – Warrior

Warrior - Tom Hardy - Joel Edgerton

WARRIOR is the movie THE FIGHTER wishes it could be. Whoa! Shots fired! THAT THING YOU LIKE is officially throwing shade at Wahlberg! But seriously. On this week’s episode, you can hear two UFC non-fans talk about the movie that took their hearts to a steel cage, threw on a deep kimura, and never let go.

Okay, so, yes, WARRIOR reaches for the low hanging fruit of being the only ‘real’ movie about MMA. But it’s worth a watch if A, you like any kind of sports movie, or B), you have human feelings and emotions. The performances by Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton are soulful, electric, and never not compelling, even as they adhere to well-worn sports-movie tropes. But good lord, how they manage to execute on those tropes.

The movie is on Netflix, so really, do yourself a favour and go watch. Watch, and let us know what you think! It’s a movie that isn’t about the twists and turns at all, so feel free to enjoy the podcast either before (to convince yourself to watch) or after (to have something to listen to while drying your tears) viewing the film. And also, queue up some of The National, and get ready for a one way ticket to FeelingsTown, population you.

That Thing You Like #26 – Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of Heaven - Movie podcast

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS A GOOD MOVIE. That’s the starting point for this episode of THAT THING YOU LIKE, and it only gets weirder from there! And by weirder, I mean Chris and Brian banter in their usual fashion about Ridley Scott’s 2005 epic. It might feel like a movie lost to the bargain-dvd-bin of time, but trust us – it’s a strangely interesting piece of cinema.

Orlando Bloom at the height of his semi-wooden stardom! Liam Neeson, going through the motions as a mentor-type! The movie has it all. Except for Liam Neeson going through the motions; he would never do that. Neeson is a total pro.

As we talk about on the pod, the movie is a weird mish-mash of kind of boring battles, anachronistic-philosophy spouting characters, and it’s KIND OF REALLY GREAT. Well, great if you watch the somehow-even-longer director’s cut. Don’t worry – all is explained inside the comforting, audio-rich walls of this podcast.
