HITCH: Will Smith, Sexism, and the Normalization of Harmful Gender Roles

hitch-will-smith

HITCH was a smash-hit romantic comedy for Will Smith, Eva Mendes, and Kevin James back in 2005. But what if we told you that this seemingly inoffensive, charming movie about a “Date Doctor” finding love is actually super weird and harmful? Aside from having a main character who’s a proto-pick up artist, HITCH reads like a how-to guide on the basics of devaluing female personhood and agency.

So if you like it when Brian and Chris talk about media theory, hegemony, representation, and how frustrating it can be when pop culture reinforces a system of control, this is the episode for you! (We promise it’s not dry and joyless and angry.)

THE FALL: Gillian Anderson and a feminist serial killer drama? – That Thing You Like #98

the-fall-tv-show

THE FALL, the BBC crime drama starring Gillian Anderson and 50 Shades of Grey’s Jamie Dornan! It’s a great show, with a few unique twists. Brian and Chris are joined by Andy Shirlaw of the 4 Eyed Forecast to talk memorable serial killers, Jamie Dornan’s cold acting, nightmares, and a strong feminist take on a fairly well worn format. Which we liked! And you will too.

Plus, we discuss all the side characters, and compare them to how amazing Gillian Anderson is as Stella.

FROZEN is PRETTY MUCH PERFECT – That Thing You Like #47

Frozen: Disney and Feminism!

FROZEN is so awesome, THAT THING YOU LIKE can’t LET IT GO. See what we did there?

Alright, that was lame. But FROZEN is seriously amazing – charming, funny, and with two interesting, engaging female leads, it’s both a classic Disney story and a refutation of Disney’s problematic history with the women in their films. Plus, Kristin Bell and Idina Menzel go FULL BROADWAY to spectacular effect! There’s so much to love, and Chris and Brian gush to their ice cold hearts’ content. But, we also take some time out to respectfully discuss the criticisms of the film. Ultimately though, there’s a lot more good than harm – if you haven’t seen it yet, where are your life priorities?

Sherlock – That Thing You Like #43

Sherlock and Moriarty slash!

SHERLOCK LIVES! THAT THING YOU LIKE couldn’t stay away from the classic-detective / tumblr-superstar that is BBC’s Sherlock – we’ve seen all of season three, and have organized our thoughts thusly into podcast form! As always, it’s a full spoiler smack-down, so be warned! But the show gave us a lot to discuss aside from plot points: Is Stephen Moffatt sexist? Did he totally ruin Irene Adler as a character? Why does the show make so many “Not gay!” jokes?

And finally, how does John not see the deep desire, the longing in Sherlock’s voice, as they stare at each other across the flat at 221B Baker Street? It had been a rough stretch for Dr. Watson, but Sherlock had always been there. As a friend. Or… something more? John often found himsel- WOOPS, SORRY GUYS, DIDN’T MEAN TO GO ALL TUMBLR / SLASHFIC ON YOU.
