TTYL Podcast #11 – Podcasts

That Thing You Like - Podcasts

That Thing You Like is a podcast. This is pretty much an undeniable fact. Go ahead, just try to deny it. Deny it three times, biblical style, even! It can’t be done. However, did you know that, as a podcast, we have thoughts about other podcasts? It’s true! On episode 11, we turn our attention to the podcasts that have brought us the most joy over the years, dating all the way back to the year 2000-aught-five.

Chris and myself (Brian) are both massive podcast consumers, so you can trust our recommendations; if you listen to this episode, you will be directed to only the choicest podcastery available in our modern age. We talk about the (sadly defunct) Alpha Rant; the Kris Straub-Scott Kurtz podcast gold that is the Daily Affirmation, Pete Holmes’ You Made it Weird (with Pete Holmes), and many more!

We apparently tend to lean towards podcasts that provide behind-the-scenes looks into specific business and artistic pursuits, but don’t worry – That Thing You Like covers a lot of podcast ground.

TTYL #8 – Strip Search Day 7

Strip Search - Day 7, Monica vs Lexxy

That Thing You Like can’t stop, won’t stop, podcasting about Penny Arcade’s Strip Search. Day 7 will long be remembered as a physically intense day of the show, one that ultimately pitted the tiny and hilarious Monica Ray against the talented, recently-kickstarted Lexxy Douglass.

Day 7 will also be remembered as the day Katie J Rice went motherflipping off on some fools, ping pong style.

The elimination matchup between Lexxy and Monica produced two legitimately great pieces, and for the first time, public opinion seems truly split. In our recap, That Thing You Like goes deep into the issues from the last three episodes. Did the ping pong episodes work? How could Khoo really fall that far in a ping pong draft? And is it right that the show might always favour solid joke construction, or is there room in the contest for thought-provoking, emotional work?

Plus, updated STRIP SEARCH POWER RANKINGS.

And really, just draft Robert Khoo you guys. I mean, seriously.

TTYL #7 – Nightmare in Silver (Doctor Who)

Neil Gaiman's "Nightmare in Silver" - Podcast Review

In 2012, NEIL GAIMAN delivered an all-time classic episode of Doctor Who, “The Doctor’s Wife”. The That Thing You Like podcast crew loved it to pieces. It was funny, charming, scary, and even a little tear-inducing – a legitimately tremendous episode of television. We were as excited as kids on Christmas for his second effort, “Nightmare in Silver”.

We did not love it to pieces.

In the latest That Thing You Like, we go into deep spoilers on an episode that really isn’t even worth spoiling. We talk about the few truly enjoyable Gaiman-esque moments, the problematic and ultimately purposeless children, and why 3,000,000 monsters are not better than one monster.

Thoughts are fairly divided on the new Gaiman episode, but Chris and I (Brian) aren’t afraid to pass judgment: It just wasn’t that good. More than that, it utilized some of Doctor Who’s worst tropes. Sigh. Neil, we still love you. Love you hardcore.

TTYL #6 – Iron Man 3

iron-man-3-tony-stark-robert-downey-jrIt’s an IRON MAN 3 podcast! That Thing You Like‘s first movie review is flying across the sky like a streak of red and gold, and gently landing in the welcoming arms of your preferred podcast downloading tool.

As you might have seen from it’s 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s proving to be a slightly divisive film. But don’t worry – only That Thing You Like has the DEFINITIVE report on whether or not it’s actually any good. Spoilers: It is only kind of good. Even though Shane Black and RDJ are a perfect writer/actor tag-team and the movie has wit and quips to spare, it has some real problems.

We cast caution to the wind and answer the hard-hitting questions: How charming is Robert Downey Jr.? Is it better than Iron Man 2? How inconsequential are Don Cheadle and Gwyneth Paltrow to the film’s plot? And how stupid is everything that’s not Robert Downey Jr.?

Spoilers again: Pretty stupid. But we watched the movie good, and have prepared our thoughts for you at the links below. Agree with us? Disagree with us? Feeling largely indifferent? Get down to the comments and express yo’ self.

TTYL #5 – Strip Search (Day Six)

Strip Search - Abby Howard and Erika MoenThat Thing You Like is ALL ABOUT Penny Arcade’s Strip Search! #StripSearch, you guys. Day #6 saw a showdown between the tangential-one, Abby Howard, and the webcomics badass / normative-definition-of-virginity-defier, Erika Moen.

And it was a doozy. A barnburner. A brouhaha, even.

Abby and Erika are both uniquely awesome, and their trial-by-art made for the hands-down best episode of Strip Search to date. But day six brought us a metric tonne of things to discuss: Why does the internet hate go-karting? Why is seeing people deal with the business-side of art so compelling? Is Tavis a bad person now? We answer all these questions, plus pitch the KHOO & SUNTER POWER HOUR.

And also Kris Straub. We heart you, Kris Straub.

TTYL #4 – Scrubs (and Kickstarter)

That Thing You Like #4 - Scrubs

It’s funny, heartfelt, and can bring grown podcast hosts to tears. What more could you ask from a network sitcom? That Thing You Like turns its attention to Scrubs, a show we humbly consider an all-time classic. Plus, we’re joined by a special BONUS GUEST: Andy Shirlaw, co-host of The 4 Eyed Forecast.

We know, we know. Zach Braff made Garden State and the internet has never forgiven him for the sin. How dare he! After breaking down what makes Scrubs so memorable, we talk about why Garden State is a little bit terrible, and debate the sound and fury surrounding Braff and Kickstarter.

It’s our first of two episodes this week – we’ll be back on Saturday to talk the all the news and go-karting of Strip Search day six.

TTYL #3 – Strip Search (Day Five)

Amy and Maki

That Thing You Like‘s coverage of Penny Arcade’s Strip Search continues! Elimination #5 pitted the refreshingly candid Amy T. Falcone against the pineappled-visage of Maki Naro. Also, I’ve come to think of Maki as a one-word, Prince type figure, so I had to look up his name to write this intro paragraph.

I digress.

It was an excellent elimination episode featuring two favourites, and Chris and myself (Brian) discuss all the news that’s fit to podcast. How can Katie be so awesome with clay? Is it actually clay or plasticine? What made the booth display challenge so compelling? And, of course, what went down in the elimination thunder-dome?
