LILO and STITCH (with Erika Moen!): An Underrated, Progressive Classic

lilo-stitch-nani-review-podcast

Disney’s LILO and STITCH is an unheralded classic! And we’re joined by ERIKA MOEN (Oh Joy Sex Toy! DAR! Bucko!) to celebrate it!

The three of us talk about what the movie meant to our 16 year old selves, what it means to us now, and how it beautifully tells the story of outsiders building their own family. Plus, we discuss its great representation of women of color, and its respect for authentic Hawaiian culture. Also, NUCLEAR BLOOD FAMILY.

We were absolutely delighted to be joined once again by Erika, especially after an attempted Emperor’s New Groove podcast that… didn’t record. But this one DID record. So enjoy it! Erika’s the smartest and best, and if you don’t already read it, make sure you check out OhJoySexToy.com every tuesday! You can also support her stellar, sex positive cartooning on Patreon! Plus, find her collected works at ErikaMoen.com. Do all of those things – you won’t regret it.

WHIPLASH REVIEW: JK Simmons, Drumming, and the Pursuit of Greatness

whiplash-podcast

Brian and Chris discuss WHIPLASH, the 2014 jazz drumming drama about obsession, the pursuit of greatness, and what it takes to achieve real greatness. We celebrate JK Simmons’ long career, gently argue about whether or not this movie is endorsing Fletcher’s viewpoint, and break down that amazing last scene. Plus, we go DEEP on the recent Miles Teller Esquire profile! Which is hilarious! And dumb!

THEY CAME TOGETHER: Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd CRUSH Hacky Romantic Comedy Tropes

they-came-together-banner

THEY CAME TOGETHER is a rom-com satire for the ages! Directed by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer!), and starring Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, and everyone you’ve ever really loved, this movie is a surreal look at all the tropes that make a modern romantic comedy.

We talk about the amazing genre skewering, why this alt. comedy style works for Chris where others don’t, and poke fun at all the reviewers who say it’s “too smart for its own good.” Because it’s not. It’s just smart enough for it’s own good, you bean-bags.

ANT-MAN: Paul Rudd Headlines the Most “Okay” MARVEL Movie Yet

ant-man-banner

ANT-MAN, Marvel’s latest, stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and Corey Stoll. And we have thoughts about it! Directed by Peyton Reed (who took over for Edgar Wright), we talk about the super-capable-but-sidelined, female lead, diet Paul Rudd, and what makes this the most aggressively “okay” movie of all time.

INSIDE OUT: Pixar’s Joyful, Sad, Complex Emotional Masterpiece (feat. Amy Poehler!)

inside-out-podcast-review

INSIDE OUT, Pixar’s best movie in years, is a coming of age story that actually focuses on the importance of understanding our own feelings! Led by (Queen) Amy Poehler, the amazing cast grounds an incredibly high concept story with plenty of laughs and moments of real emotional depth. And sadness. But with an important lesson about that sadness!

In this podcast, we talk about the amazing performances, the incredibly nuanced portrayal of an 11 year old girl’s emotional landscape, and the importance of this movie as a tool for understanding the way we feel and relate to each other. At least one of us gave this one a GOOD+! Find out who, and let us know what you thought of this new animated gem.

OBVIOUS CHILD: Jenny Slate, and a Hilarious Abortion Comedy – That Thing You Like #113

obvious-child

OBVIOUS CHILD is a 2014 GEM of a comedy, starring Jenny Slate (Kroll Show! Parks and Recreation! Marcel the Seashell with Shoes On!), and written/directed by Gillian Robespierre. And it’s hilarious! It’s also about abortion. But in a really progressive way! It actually makes a point to normalize the procedure, keep the focus on Jenny Slate’s choice, and break down social stigmas. But again, in a funny way.

We spend 40 minutes celebrating the great script and great performances, plus talk about how this gets at the nature of being a stand-up comedian much more than Judd Apatow’s Funny People ever did. Enjoy!

(And stick around for a bonus chat about the Entourage movie existing vs. Avengers: Age of Ultron? It’ll make sense.)

MAD MAX FURY ROAD: Action, Feminism, and Charlize Theron Forever

charlize-theron-mad-max

MAD MAX FURY ROAD! George Miller’s feminist action spectacular! God, what a breath of fresh air this movie was. Tom Hardy stars as the titular Max, but who cares, because this is Charlize Theron’s film as the incredible Imperator Furiosa. Sisters are doing it for themselves!

We’re joined by Tyler Heppell and Jenna Reid to talk a world driven insane by toxic masculinity, the need for feminine ideas to be given as much credit as traditionally male ones, and the way this movie uses balls-to-the-wall incredible action sequences to rail against the status quo. Let us know what you think: Is Mad Max the pro-woman action blockbuster we’ve all been waiting for? Did you hate it? Love it? (We hope you loved it.)
